Cultural Studies

The cultural area in a Montessori Nursery class room covers a wide range of topics and activities. Children will learn about Biology, Science, History, Geography including Continents and countries, Zoology, Magnetism, Life Cycles, Music, Art and craft. When children first enter the nursery they are introduced to the Globe, they learn about where we live, Earth and Sea. The cultural area offers the child the opportunity to explore and learn about the animate and inanimate aspects of our planet.

As teachers, we give the children opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world and enable them to build on skills and concepts acquired in the Practical life area.

If you have a child who is fascinated by volcanoes, we introduce the volcano eruption experiment using vinegar, food colouring and bicarbanate of soda. As if by magic the reaction of the ingredients together produce a volcanic eruption. After being shown, the child is then free to explore the experiment for himself as often as he wishes.

Children have all kinds of fascination with things such as, Animals, Transport and Nature so within a Montessori environment we allow them to explore these topics freely and to extend their learning and knowledge through experimentation and being hands on with the materials. Children are encouraged to bring items in from home and from the environment to contribute towards the nature table, as the seasons change they learn about seasons, weather, leaves and trees. We also provide them with books and materials to complement this learning.
